HBCU SUMMIT NEWS

The HBCU Summit, held at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, was a remarkable success, bringing together 27 representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and 154 educators and leaders from across the country.

Dr. Lezama, Founder and CEO share the Summit’s significance, stating, " The HBCU Summit has brought together some of the brightest minds and most dedicated educators in the country.  The power and influence that was present reminded us all that together we can continue to shape the minds and hearts of our students."

The Summit featured a series of plenary sessions and workshops that focused on college counseling, college preparedness, understanding the HBCU landscape, and addressing the challenges these institutions face daily. The work of these leaders at their respective institutions was captured through the heartfelt stories and presentations that spoke to the legacy of HBCUs.

The Summit participants received a special surprise when Dr. Lezama and Ms. Paulo welcomed the Du Bois Scholars from Harvard to join for the Community Table discussions  - many students who joined were representing the many HBCU leaders who were present for the Summit. Through the Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery (H&LS) initiative, 20 Du Bois Scholars are participating in a fully funded, 9-week summer research internship at Harvard College. These scholars are from research-focused HBCUs. Ms. Mindy Paulo, President of Building Bridges, shared, "The Du Bois Scholars are our why. They inspire us to do what is necessary to ensure they have the best educational experience."

The Summit reminded participants of the talented students that cross our paths each day.  Dr. Bleich, Vice Provost for Special Projects at Harvard University -in her welcome remarks, reminded us that our students are talented; they just need the opportunity and access to showcase that talent. The Summit reinforced that need to continue the impactful work even when faced with obstacles and adversity. Dr. Lezama shared “we must embrace what often feels impossible and sacrifice all we can by actively engaging in the process of ideation and most importantly execution, and collectively we all then can drive meaningful change.”

The Summit is a continued commitment of Building Bridges that speaks to the power of collaboration, resilience, and dedication to educational excellence. This event underscores the mission of BBE that supports HBCUs and ensures that all students have the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
